Karate is an ancient Okinawan art of self-defense in which the bare hands, arms and feet are used as weapons. The word 'karate' means "empty hands". The history of karate can be traces back as far as 520 A.D. to a Buddhist monk named Bodhidharma, who founded a weaponless fighting art that was the predecessor of modern day karate.
Karate then traveled from India to China to Okinawa to Japan. Kushanku introduced karate to okinawa in 1761, Gichin Funakoshi introduced Karate to japan in 1922. OKINAWA KARATE KOBUDO KAI teaches traditional Okinawan Karate, Kobudo and personal self-defense.
Why should I study karate?
Most people study karate to learn self-defense and self-confidence. Karate places considerable demands on one's physical and mental abilities, making it an excellent means of all around body conditioning and character development. The goal of karate training is to produce a well-balanced, confident person who is able to avoid conflict but is skilled enough to defend himself or herself when necessary.
Why should I train at Okinawa Karate Kobudo Kai?
Okinwa Karate Kobudo Kai offers a unique blend of traditional martial arts training coupled with proven physical and mental development techniques. Our goal is to maximize each students potential. Our instructional approach is designed to give each student a thorough understanding of the theoretical and physical aspects of the martial arts. Classes are small and enrollment is limited to serious students.
Isn't all karate the same?
There are various styles of karate, each emphasising different areas. Martial arts are often classified into two groups: "hard styles" and "soft styles". Okinawan kenpo is a "hard style", along with such Japanese and Korean disciplines as Shotokan, Shorin Ryu and Tae Kwon Do. "Soft styles" include Tai Chi Chuan, Qi Gong, and several forms of Kung Fu.
What is a typical karate class like?
We suggest that you come in and watch a few of our classes before enrolling. A typical class lasts one to one and a half hours and includes the following actvities: exercises for muscle toning, flexibility and stamina; basic moves like punching, striking, blocking and kicking;organized sets of movements known as kata, which develop precision and coordination; self-defense moves such as reponses to grabs, punches and kicks; and sparring.
Can children take karate?
Yes, karate can help chidren develop self-discipline and improve mind/body coordination. Children must be at least 4 years old to enroll. Some parents also train with their children, making karate a true family activity.
Will I get injured?
As is the case with most physical activity you will have to get in shape. Stretching and calisthenics may produce muscle soreness in the initial stages. Our karate classes are well supervised and injury of any type is very rare. However, karate is very physical and minor bruises on the legs and arms may occur during serious training. Protective equipment is utilized during sparring. Out classes have an excellent record of providing safe, realistic training.
