Eku-Bo

The eku-bo is a simple fisherman's oar transformed into a lethal weapon. The eku as a weapon probably evolved in the fishing villages of Okinawan. Eku techniques are somewhat similar to bo techniques with slight differences. The eku is usually shorter than the bo. Also, because one end of the eku is a flattened wooden "blade", more sophisticated wrist techniques are required for proper positioning. Like the bo, the eku is most effective in open areas. Ekus are useful for keeping armed (or unarmed) opponents at a safe distance. The blade of the eku is also used to scoop sand or dirt into the enemies eyes, therefore rendering him temporarily blind. Offensively the eku is good for striking and poking. Defensively, it is used for blocking or parrying incoming attacks.
